One thing that the Apple range of mobile personal devices (iPhone, iPod, etc.) has to it's advantage is the seemingly seamless ecosystem that allows you to plug in and organise your music, video, calendars, and more in one place. For owners of any other device, you many not be missing out on this experience for much longer.

doubleTwist is an application released by notable digital rights management hacker Jon Lech Johansen ("DVD Jon") that gives you a simple interface to manage and sync your media content to a number of devices, including your BlackBerry, iPod, PSP, and other mobile devices like mobile phones from Nokia, LG, Palm, Motorola and more.

One missing element that had them a step behind iTunes was the ability to download music right within the application, making it easy to add to your music collection and sync it to your device in one place. The key word there was 'was'. As of the other day, they have included easy access to the Amazon music store from right within the application. And they've managed to integrate this without accumulating all of the other clutter now present in the latest version of iTunes.

Not only does it now bring this to the table, but the software itself allows you to take all of your other music, photo and video content, and format it automagically to suit your device. One thing that has slowed down the uptake of viewing video on mobile devices was the myriad of video conversion codecs, software, and hoops you needed to jump through before getting videos on there. doubleTwist takes the confusion out of this and helps you sync it right to your device of choice.

Ironically, your iPhone with version 3.0+ firmware is on eof the devices that won't be able to harness the power of doubleTwist, but it will help bring hundreds of types of mobile phones, digital cameras and (even) camcorders to life. It could even help you cut down on handbag/pocket clutter, enabling you to possibly leave the iPod at home.

doubleTwist is available for PC/Windows and Mac/OSX, so leave your iPod at home and make use of your phone's media playing capabilities.
